Every home in Goa has a list of small jobs that never seem big enough to call someone for: the bathroom tap that drips all night, the tube light that flickers, the ceiling fan that wobbles, the AC that hasn't been serviced since last summer. Then the MCB trips during a storm, and suddenly you need a skilled person today.
Instead of waiting days for a busy contractor or paying a large "visit charge" upfront, hiring an electrician, plumber or AC technician by the hour is often simpler: you pay for the time the work actually takes, you see the rate before you book, and you can bundle several small jobs into one visit.
This guide explains which jobs suit hourly booking, what to check before work starts, how to keep costs fair, and how to book on TatkalStaff.
Jobs that suit an hourly technician
Hourly booking works best for repairs and installations that take between one and four hours. Some common examples in Goan homes, shops and holiday rentals:
- Electrician: replacing switches and sockets, fixing a fan or light, finding why an MCB or RCCB keeps tripping, installing a geyser or exhaust fan, wiring an inverter, or adding a new point for a washing machine.
- Plumber: leaking taps and flush tanks, blocked drains, fixing or replacing a geyser connection, installing a water filter line, changing a damaged pipe, or checking an overhead tank that overflows.
- AC & Refrigeration Technician: pre-summer AC servicing, cleaning filters and coils, checking gas pressure, fixing water dripping from the indoor unit, or a fridge that has stopped cooling.
- Related trades: a Carpenter, Painter, RO / Water Purifier Technician or Generator / Inverter Technician. Holiday-home owners can have a caretaker let the technician in for a pre-season check, and for parties see our guide to event staffing in Goa.
If you have three or four small jobs, list them all and book a single block of time. One two-hour visit is almost always cheaper than three separate visits.
Why timing matters in Goa
Goa's weather is hard on homes. The monsoon brings heavy rain, high humidity and frequent power cuts, which show up as damp walls, rusted fittings, tripping circuits and stressed inverters. The dry, hot months that follow are when ACs work hardest.
A sensible yearly routine looks like this:
| When | What to book | Why |
|---|---|---|
| April to May | Electrician and plumber check-up, roof and terrace drains | Fix loose wiring and blocked outlets before the rains |
| Late May | Inverter or generator service | Power cuts are common during the monsoon |
| October to November | Plumber for leaks, painter for damp patches | Repair what the rain revealed |
| February to March | AC servicing | Be ready before the summer heat and the rush for technicians |
What to check before work starts
A few minutes of checking protects your home and your wallet.
- Relevant training or experience. Many good technicians hold an ITI certificate in Electrician, Plumber or Refrigeration and Air Conditioning trades. Others have years of hands-on work. Ask what similar jobs they've done. Our guide to ITI and diploma hourly work explains these qualifications.
- Ratings from earlier clients. On TatkalStaff, every booking is rated on professionalism, politeness and punctuality, and the scores stay on the profile. Read why verified staff and ratings matter.
- A clear description of the problem. Send photos or a short video through the app chat. A technician who understands the job beforehand brings the right tools and parts.
- Who buys the parts. Agree whether you'll buy parts yourself or the technician will bring them with a bill. Ask for genuine, ISI-marked electrical items. You can check what the ISI mark means on the Bureau of Indian Standards website.
- Safety first for electrical work. The main switch should be turned off before any wiring is touched. If the problem is at the meter or the incoming supply line, that belongs to the electricity department. Contact the Goa Electricity Department instead of letting anyone open the meter.
How to keep the cost fair
Hourly pricing is transparent, but a little planning helps you get the most from every hour.
- Bundle small jobs. Write a list of everything that needs fixing before the technician arrives.
- Clear the work area. Move furniture away from the AC unit, empty the cabinet under the sink and make the switchboard reachable. Time spent moving things is time you pay for.
- Keep parts separate from labour. The hourly rate covers the technician's time. Parts and materials are extra and should come with a bill.
- Ask about energy savings. When replacing an AC, fan or geyser, a technician can explain star ratings. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency runs the star label programme that shows which appliances cost less to run.
- Book a little extra time for older homes. Older Goan houses often hide surprises behind the walls.
Each technician on TatkalStaff sets their own hourly rate, and you see it before you book. There's no hidden visit charge on top.
