When you let someone into your home to care for a parent, or hand over your car keys to a driver, or give an accountant access to your books, you are trusting a stranger. Most of the time that trust is well placed. But "most of the time" isn't good enough when it's your family or your business.
That's why hiring through a platform with verification and ratings matters. This article explains what each one does, what it doesn't do, and how to use both sensibly.
What verification means
Verification answers a basic question: is this person who they say they are, and do they have the education they claim?
On TatkalStaff, every staff member signs up with Google and adds their education (12th, ITI, diploma, degree or PG). Before they can go online and receive bookings, our team checks their education and ID. Staff who haven't been approved can't take bookings.
Verification protects you from the most basic risks: fake identities and invented qualifications. For long-term workers in your home, you may also choose police verification; in Goa, the police citizen portal offers servant and employee verification.
What verification doesn't tell you is whether someone is good at the job, punctual or pleasant to work with. That's where ratings come in.
What ratings mean
After each job on TatkalStaff, clients rate the staff member on three things:
- Professionalism: did they do the job properly and know what they were doing?
- Politeness: were they respectful to you, your family, your customers?
- Punctuality: did they arrive and finish on time?
We chose these three because they're what clients care about most when hiring someone by the hour, and because they're things any client can judge fairly, even without technical knowledge of the work.
Over time, ratings separate consistently reliable professionals from the rest. Good staff benefit most: their ratings help them get booked more often and justify higher rates.
How to read a rating sensibly
Ratings are useful, but read them with common sense:
- Look at the number of ratings, not just the score. A perfect score from one job tells you less than a very good score across many jobs.
- New isn't bad. Every professional starts with zero ratings. A newly verified staff member with strong qualifications may be an excellent choice, especially for a short first booking.
- Match the profession. A great rating as a driver doesn't tell you much about the same person's skill as a tutor.
- Rate honestly yourself. Inflated ratings ("everyone gets five stars") make the system useless for everyone. Fair, honest ratings help good staff stand out.
Protection for clients
Beyond verification and ratings, a few other features protect clients:
- No-show refund. If a booked staff member doesn't show, you get a full refund. Read the details in our refund policy.
- Advance booking. You can schedule up to 7 days ahead with a 30% advance, so you aren't scrambling at the last minute.
- A record of every booking. Dates, hours and the person you booked are all kept in the app.
Protection for staff
Trust has to go both ways. Staff are protected too:
- Clear bookings. The hours and task are agreed in the app before the job.
- Ratings reward good work. A professional who turns up on time and does good work builds a record that's visible to every future client.
- Fair earnings. Staff set their own hourly rate within a band and receive 91% of each job amount.
Why we don't allow dealing outside the app
TatkalStaff has a strict rule: no direct dealing outside the app. It's sometimes tempting, for both sides, to arrange the next job privately. But once a job moves outside the app:
- there's no record of the booking or the hours;
- the no-show refund and other protections no longer apply;
- ratings stop reflecting the person's real work;
- disputes become one person's word against another's.
If a client wants to hire someone permanently, there's a proper way to do it through the app. The full rules are in our terms and privacy policy.
Staying safe online, generally
Whatever platform you use, a few rules keep you safe:
- Be suspicious of anyone who asks you to pay or share OTPs over the phone. Never share an OTP with anyone.
- Don't click payment links sent by strangers.
- If you are a victim of online fraud, report it on the government's National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal or call the cybercrime helpline 1930.
- For consumer complaints, the National Consumer Helpline can guide you.
Putting it together
- Verification tells you the person is real and qualified.
- Ratings tell you how they actually perform: professionalism, politeness and punctuality.
- Platform rules (in-app bookings, refunds) protect both sides when something goes wrong.
None of these replaces your own judgement. Meet the person, give clear instructions, start with a short booking if you're unsure, and rate honestly afterwards.
