Freelancing isn't only for software developers and designers. Across India, drivers, personal assistants and tutors already work for several families or businesses at once, often through word of mouth. An hourly platform simply makes that easier: clients find you, bookings are recorded, and good work earns visible ratings.
This guide explains how to start freelancing in three of the most in-demand roles, and how to set a rate that's fair to you and attractive to clients.
Step 1: Pick your lane (and be honest about your skills)
Freelance driver. You'll do airport runs, hospital visits, office pick-ups, weddings and long drives, usually in the client's own car. You need a valid driving licence for the vehicle type, a calm driving style, good knowledge of local roads and punctuality.
Personal assistant (PA). PAs manage calendars, calls, errands, travel bookings, paperwork and event logistics for busy professionals and small business owners. You need clear spoken and written communication, comfort with a smartphone, email and basic spreadsheets, and discretion with private information.
Tutor. Tutors help students with school subjects, board exams or skills like spoken English. You need strong subject knowledge, patience and the ability to explain simply. Many tutors specialise by level: primary (Std 1–7), secondary (Std 8–10) or higher secondary (Std 11–12).
You can list up to 5 professions on TatkalStaff, so you can combine roles, for example PA plus receptionist, or tutor plus translator.
Step 2: Get your documents ready
Clients and platforms will want to know who you are and what you've studied. Keep these ready:
- a government ID;
- education certificates (12th, ITI, diploma, degree or PG);
- for drivers, your driving licence; you can check licence details on the government Sarathi Parivahan portal;
- for tutors, marksheets in your subject and any teaching certificate;
- a clear, recent profile photo.
Storing certificates in DigiLocker makes it easy to share them when asked.
Step 3: Create a profile that gets booked
Your profile is your shop window. Make it specific:
- Headline: "Experienced family driver: Panaji, Porvorim, airport runs" is better than "Driver".
- Experience: mention the years, the kind of clients and anything special (night driving, automatic cars, handling elderly passengers).
- For PAs: list tools you use (Google Calendar, Excel, email) and languages you speak.
- For tutors: list subjects, boards (SSC, CBSE, ICSE) and levels you teach.
On TatkalStaff you sign up free with Google, choose your professions, add your education and set your hourly rate. Our team checks your education and ID before you go online. Start here: Join as staff.
Step 4: Set your rate
Each profession on TatkalStaff has an hourly band, and you choose your rate within it. To decide where you sit in the band:
- Your experience. New to freelancing? Start in the lower-middle and rise with good ratings.
- Your specialisation. A tutor for board-exam maths, or a PA who can manage event logistics, can justify a higher rate than a generalist.
- Travel. If you're willing to travel further, factor in time and fuel.
- Demand. If you're booked solid every week, it's a signal to increase your rate.
You keep 91% of every job amount; the platform keeps 9%. So when you think about your earnings, calculate on 91% of the booking.
Step 5: Deliver like a professional
On TatkalStaff, clients rate you on three things after every job: professionalism, politeness and punctuality. Some habits that consistently earn good ratings:
- Arrive 5–10 minutes early. If you're delayed, inform the client through the app immediately.
- Confirm the task at the start: "We're going to the hospital and back, with a wait of about two hours. Is that right?"
- Drivers: keep the car clean, drive smoothly, don't use your phone while driving, and follow traffic rules.
- PAs: take notes, send a short summary at the end of the day and protect confidential information.
- Tutors: prepare before the session, track progress and give parents brief feedback.
Read more on why ratings matter for both staff and clients.
Step 6: Follow the rules that protect you
All bookings and payments stay inside the TatkalStaff app; direct dealing outside the app isn't allowed. That may feel restrictive, but it protects you: there's a record of every job, the agreed hours and the client. The full rules are in our terms.
If a client wants to hire you full-time, there's a proper route for that inside the app too.
Step 7: Keep track of your income
Freelance income is still income. Keep a simple record of your earnings each month. Depending on your total income, you may need to file an income tax return; the Income Tax Department's e-filing portal explains who needs to file and how. If in doubt, ask a tax professional.
You can also explore longer-term roles and skill programmes on the National Career Service portal.
