When a parent comes home after surgery, or an elderly relative needs a dressing changed every evening, most families in Goa face the same question: do we really need a full-time nurse, or just someone for a few hours? For many situations the honest answer is a few hours, and that is exactly where hourly home nursing helps.
This guide walks you through deciding what kind of help you need, how to find and check a nurse, and how to book one by the hour without stress.
First, decide what kind of help you need
"Nurse" is used loosely in everyday conversation, so it helps to be clear before you start looking. Broadly, families need one of three things:
- Skilled nursing tasks. Injections prescribed by a doctor, wound dressing, catheter care, checking vital signs, helping with a nebuliser, or monitoring someone after a hospital discharge. These need a trained nurse (GNM, B.Sc Nursing or ANM, depending on the task).
- Personal care and companionship. Help with bathing, feeding, walking, toileting, giving medicines on time and simply keeping an elderly person company. A trained caregiver or elderly attendant is usually the right fit.
- A mix of both. For example, a nurse for the morning dressing and a caregiver for the afternoon.
Write down the tasks, the time of day, and how many days you expect to need help. A short list like "dressing at 9 am, BP check, help with lunch, Monday to Saturday for two weeks" will make every later conversation easier.
Why hourly instead of a full-time arrangement?
Full-time live-in care makes sense for some patients, but it is a big commitment in cost, space and management. Hourly care is often better when:
- the care need is for a fixed task (a dressing, an injection, physiotherapy support) rather than all day;
- family members are home in the mornings and evenings and only need cover during working hours;
- the need is temporary, such as recovery after an operation;
- you want to try someone out before committing to a longer arrangement.
On TatkalStaff, you can book a Home Care Nurse or a Caregiver / Elderly Attendant by the hour, for one day or for as many days as you need. You can see the person's hourly rate before you book. Start from the home care nurse listing or the caregiver listing.
What to check before you book
Whether you hire through an app, an agency or a personal reference, the basic checks are the same.
- Qualification. Ask what they studied and where. Nurses in India register with their State Nursing Council; the Indian Nursing Council website explains the recognised nursing courses and councils. For injections and wound care, insist on a trained nurse rather than a general attendant.
- Identity and verification. Know the person's full name and see a valid ID. In Goa, the police citizen portal offers servant and employee verification for people working in your home; many families use it for long-term helpers.
- Experience with similar patients. Elderly care, post-operative care and dementia care are quite different. Ask directly: "Have you cared for someone with this condition before?"
- Clear instructions from the doctor. A nurse should follow the treating doctor's written instructions for medicines and procedures. Keep the prescription and discharge summary handy.
- Ratings or references. Feedback from previous families is valuable. On TatkalStaff, clients rate every staff member on professionalism, politeness and punctuality after a job, and that rating is visible on the profile. You can read more in why verified staff and ratings matter.
How hourly booking works on TatkalStaff
The process is designed for a busy family member using a phone:
- Open tatkalstaff.in (it works in any phone browser and can be installed like an app). Choose the profession and your town; Goa is our launch region, covering 15 towns from Pernem to Canacona.
- Compare verified staff by hourly rate, education and ratings.
- Book for the hours you need, for as many days as you need. You can book for now or schedule up to 7 days ahead with a 30% advance.
- After each job, rate the staff member.
If the staff member doesn't show up, you get a full refund; see our refund policy for details. All bookings and communication stay inside the app; direct dealing outside the app isn't allowed, which protects both families and staff.
Preparing your home for the first visit
A little preparation helps the first visit go smoothly:
- Keep the prescription, discharge summary and a list of current medicines in one folder.
- Have basic supplies ready (gloves, cotton, the prescribed dressings), or agree in advance who will bring them.
- Show the nurse where things are: the bathroom, clean water, the patient's medicines, the light switches for the patient's room.
- Share an emergency contact and the nearest hospital's number.
- If the patient has preferences (language, food, a favourite chair), mention them. Small things matter a lot to elderly patients.
Questions to ask on the first day
- "What did you notice today that I should tell the doctor?"
- "Is there anything we should buy or change at home?"
- "Are the timings working for the patient?"
Good nurses and caregivers will often notice early warning signs, such as a dressing that looks different, or a change in appetite or mood, before the family does. Encourage them to tell you.
Safety and respect go both ways
Hourly staff are professionals, and the best arrangements are respectful on both sides. Agree the tasks clearly, keep to the booked hours, and avoid asking a nurse to do unrelated household work that wasn't part of the booking. If something goes wrong, contact support on WhatsApp at 74988 04142 (7am–8pm) rather than settling it informally.
For general information on health services, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is a useful starting point. For a broader checklist on caring for elderly parents, read our caregiver safety checklist.
In short
- Decide whether you need nursing tasks, personal care or both.
- Hourly care suits fixed tasks, daytime cover and temporary recovery.
- Check qualification, ID, experience and ratings.
- Book by the hour, schedule up to 7 days ahead, and rate after each visit.
When you're ready, find a home care nurse near you. And if you are a nurse or caregiver looking for flexible work, you can join TatkalStaff as staff for free.
